MN-S Locals

♦  The MN-S Local is responsible for preparing the governance of the community.

♦   To develop a Métis Local in your community you need to have at least a minimum of nine (9) Métis members.

♦   The nine Métis members all need to meet the definition of Métis citizens as defined by the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan and the Métis National Council.

 ♦  New Locals can be admitted by their respective Regional Councils. They also need to be ratified by the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly.

 ♦  The Local can become eligible for social funding or conduct fund-raising initiatives if it chooses to incorporate as a legal entity.

♦  A Local can register by providing its documents to the Provincial Secretary with a clear intent to register under the Métis Act.

♦  Or a Local can incorporate under the Saskatchewan Non-Profit Corporations Act or Cooperatives Act.

♦  Inactive locals can be dissolved by their respective Regional Council. The decision by the Regional Council to dissolve a Local has to be ratified by the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly.

♦  Each Local should develop Local bylaws that are consistent with the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan Constitution.

♦  Local bylaws should include elections processes, terms of service, types of election, i.e. ballot box or at an Annual General Assembly.

♦  Each Local bylaws should be ratified by vote of Local members.

♦  Each Local bylaws should include terms of Métis Local governance.
