MN-S Senate

The new role for the MN-S Senate is to provide guidance to the MN-S.

♦ Appointments are made at a Regional Meeting

♦ Senate positions are life time appointments or until such time as the Senator is unable to fulfill his or her duties

♦ The position is generally ceremonial, and elder consultation

♦ Senators cannot be involved in MN-S politics.

Provincial Métis Council

♦ Is responsible for the governance of the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan.

♦ Is composed of the MN-S Executive, 12 Regional Directors, one representative from the Métis Women of Saskatchewan and one representative from the Métis Youth of Saskatchewan.

♦ The MN-S President is the Chairperson of the Provincial Métis Council.

Métis Women of Saskatchewan

♦ The Métis Women of Saskatchewan is a provincial organization mandated to provide a voice to Métis Women across the province. The organization has evolved over the years to place an increased emphasis on governance and Métis Women’s perspectives on Métis governance matters.

♦ The mandate for increased involvement of Métis Women in all spheres of Métis politics has its roots in the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan Constitution.

♦ The Métis Women have specific representation at the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly, the Provincial Métis Council and on all Affiliate governing boards. The Métis Women are also recognized within the composition of the MNS Senate.

MN-S Regional Councils

♦ The Regional Councils make decisions that affect the entire Region.

♦ They provide direction to the Regional Directors.

♦ The MN-S Regional Councils are made up of all the legitimate Local Presidents in each Region.

♦ The President of each MN-S Local is entitled to represent citizens on the Regional Council.

♦ When a President cannot attend a meeting of the Regional Council or others, the Vice-President can and should attend in his or her place.

PMC Areas of Jurisdiction

♦ Has the authority to appoint commissions, committees and other subsidiary bodies.

♦ Designate signing authorities for MN-S

♦ Set the date and place for the AGM and MNLA

♦ Responsible to ensure that affiliates, departments are functioning properly.

♦ Shall form the cabinet and be responsible for Ministerial portfolios assigned and recommended by the President.

♦ Responsible for relationships with other governments, federal and provincial

PMC Accountability

♦ Accountability is a critical aspect of government: elected officials at all levels of the MN-S governance structure are accountable for their actions and decisions

♦ Representatives of MN-S Local, Regional and Provincial levels of governments are accountable to their Métis citizens

♦ MN-S needs to be accountable to its funding providers, i.e. the federal and provincial governments.

♦ Increased accountability ensures transparency in government.
