SIAST Aboriginal Student Leadership Week Recognizes "The Year of The Métis"

"It is my pleasure to bring greetings on behalf of my colleagues at SIAST Kelsey Campus as we recognize this week as Aboriginal Student Leadership Week.  This year’s theme is “2010, The Year of the Métis” as was proclaimed by the Government of Saskatchewan.

This opening ceremony marks the start of a busy week of events and activities as part of the Aboriginal Student Leadership week.  SIAST aspires to be a national leader in Aboriginal student success and we are pleased to host this event.

The week is designed to promote within the aboriginal student community the importance of leadership and concepts of leadership. It is also an opportunity for everyone to be reminded that Canada is a nation of many cultures.  It is a nation of people that have gathered from all parts of the world and for 200 years the Métis were the backbone of the economy in Canada.

The history of the Métis people in Canada is at times, not well understood and in particular, the Métis tend to be some of the least acknowledged people in Canadian history.  They have formed a significant, vibrant and distinct culture across Western Canada. This event will promote and allow the campus community to learn and understand further about the people and their culture.

I encourage all to take part in the events and activities of the week and help honor and celebrate 2010, the Year of the Métis."-Gerry B. Bonsal Director, SIAST Kelsey Campus
