MN-S Applauds Federal Government on Motion to Recognize Métis Contributions

December 10, 2009 (Saskatoon, SK) – Métis Nation – Saskatchewan is honored by a motion tabled in Parliament.  The Motion, made by Wascana Member of Parliament, the Hon. Ralph Goodale, called on the Government to use 2010 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the historic events of 1885 in Saskatchewan and to recognize the contributions of the Métis Nation to all aspects of Canadian society.  The motion was adopted unanimously.

“I would like to thank our Members of Parliament for unanimously supporting this historic motion in our Nation’s Capital.” comments MN-S President Robert Doucette. “Having the leaders of this great country recognize the Métis people’s contributions to this great country signifies a new era of moving forward together and understanding, not only for Métis citizens but for all Canadians.”

In a Media Release yesterday, Goodale was quoted as saying,” “The Parliament of Canada has a duty to honour the past and give tribute to the tremendous contributions of the Métis Nation to the development of this country,” He noted that the Saskatchewan Legislature adopted a similar motion earlier in the year.

These sentiments were echoed by the Liberal Aboriginal Affairs Critic MP Todd Russell.

“2010 will mark the 125th anniversary of a series of crucial events that helped to shape the future of our nation,” said the Labrador Member of Parliament. “I am honoured to be a Métis in the House of Commons and to second this Motion.”
